"Log Cabin"—"Courthouse Steps" variation (local name: "Bricklayer")
Like most women in Gee’s Bend, Minder Coleman learned from her mother: "She put me to sewing. That's how we started. I never did have a book or pattern or nothing. She just drew her own pattern. She made those old-fashioned quilts." Several of Minder's own "old fashioned" quilts survive, including this "Bricklayer" from around 1940 in gray and black strips of different widths set off against white.
