His hardheadedness and durability, as required by habitation on the margins of the inhabited world (like Griffin), conjures a reward—his head sprouts a wizard's hat—which suggests a connection between the rites of survival in antagonistic climes and the gradual acquisition of wizardry "tricks": magic as a kind of bunion rubbed up by long-term social and political discomfort.
